Shirley Pettibone Artist (1936-2011)

Known for highly detailed paintings of nature, Shirley earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Otis Art Institute of Los Angeles in 1962. Her career as an artist began in the early 1960s with three dimensional assemblages consisting of drawings, paintings and collage from a feminist perspective. She received an NEA grant in 1976, and became focused on photo realistic oil paintings, watercolors and monotype prints featuring water, flowers, landscapes and depictions of wildlife. Her works have been exhibited in many galleries and are held as part of the permanent collections of several museums. She painted daily throughout her decades-long career and hoped that her art would convey a life affirming spirit to the viewer.

Artist Statement
"My paintings are like a written page. The meaning is not apparent in a glance, but reveals itself as the eye slowly wanders over the surface, taking in the details, enjoying the information that is conveyed through the small and insignificant. Complexity adds richness and is closer to the truth than the simplifications of man. I am a realist, but some of the symbolism of my early work still lies beneath the surface. The stroke of the hand is essential in painting. It is the calligraphy of the individual artist; the handwriting that is unique."
